I realised it was time to do something with the old VW. It had been sitting in the garage unmoved for 10 years! We had been looking at electric vehicles for some time and had admired several EKombi's - however the price was way out of our range.

Converting the fastback seemed like the perfect compromise. It would stay in the family and hopefully get to live for another several decades.

Getting the car moving was no easy task. After ten years, the tyres were flat, the brakes seized and the fuel in the tank and lines fossilised. To make things worse, rats had nested in the engine bay and mould lined every surface in the cabin (thanks to all the horse-hair insulation under the vinyl).
